The Faust Brothers Building (FBB) is an existing five-story commercial property, listed in the Maryland Historical Register. The 34,000 square foot structure was built by Benjamin F. Bennett in 1875. The building features a classic cast iron façade, highlighted by columns, arches, spandrels, quoins, and rope moldings. The building stretches from block to block between West Baltimore and West Redwood Streets. Because of a change in grade, the façade on West Baltimore is five stories, while the façade on West Redwood is six stories. The building was constructed for and occupied by the Faust Brothers, wholesale shoe dealers. The existing construction comprises multi-width brick masonry bearing walls, supporting a two-bay layout of timber joists. The centerline support at each level is provided by large timber girders and round, often fluted, cast-iron columns. The building retains beautiful details and a structure that is sound and intact, and has been redeveloped as a shell to provide for multi-tenant flexible office space on the upper floors and retail use at street—level. The FBB is located in the center of downtown Baltimore, in the heart of the West Side Initiative (WSI). The WSI is a public/private partnership formed to renew the West Side of downtown Baltimore into a vibrant mixed-use neighborhood, that supports the continued growth of the University of Maryland at Baltimore and the University of Maryland Medical System, prominent institutions which reside within two blocks of the property. KANN Partners provided full architectural and interior design services, as well as applications for State and Federal Historic Tax Credits (which were awarded).
