The Annapolitan Care Center, located just outside of Annapolis, Maryland, is an 84-bed assisted-living facility, with a 24-bed Special Care Unit designed specifically for residents with Alzheimers and other forms of advanced dementia. Situated on a 7.2-acre site, the facility was built around an existing 9,000 SF restaurant, which was renovated to accommodate dining spaces, kitchen and housekeeping services, and a 33-person adult day-care center. Designed to help aging seniors maintain a high level of independence, the facility offers several dining environments, numerous lounges and common areas, and a number of different outdoor activity spaces. The Special Care Unit has its own enclosed courtyard, designed in conjunction with the adjacent multipurpose room, to allow dementia-stricken residents to circulate inside and outside in a secure environment. Full architectural services, as well as master site planning and interior design (including furniture selection) were provided. The project was financed through the HUD Section 232 program.
