Catered Living of Pikesville, an award-winning 70-bed assisted-living facility, consists of an existing 6,200 SF house and a new 31,000 SF “addition.” The project is located on a long and narrow urban site in Baltimore, Maryland, and is strongly influenced by both the physical limitations of the site and the aesthetic characteristics of the existing house. Saving the Tudor-style house, and incorporating it as the “front door” of the facility, was established as a determinant design factor of the project from the very beginning. The house, which sets the tone for the project, was renovated to accommodate a formal parlor, a family dining room, a refreshment bar, activity spaces and administrative offices. The Tudor style and detailing of the house’s exterior are echoed in the design of the new “addition” which contains all of the resident rooms and most of the common areas, including the main dining room and a full-service kosher kitchen. Full architectural services were provided, as well as a preliminary feasibility study.
