Located on a prominent corner along Charles Street in the Goucher Historic District of Baltimore City, the Noble House project involved the renovation and expansion of an existing 50-bed comprehensive-care facility to 110 beds. Housed in a four-level, turn-of-the-century mansion - - originally built as a home for a railroad tycoon, and subsequently used as a brothel, as a girls’ dormitory for Goucher College, and finally, as a nursing home - - the facility violated countless health and building codes. The project entailed bringing the existing structure into compliance with current building, health, and accessibility codes, while preserving its historic details and attributes; and expanding the facility into the adjacent vacant lots along Charles Street and 24th Street, in such a way as to maintain the existing fabric of both streets, and to complement the historic character of the original building. Full architectural services were provided, as well as interior design. The project was financed through the HUD Section 232 program.
